The Board of Directors meeting was called to order at 6:30pm by President Don Butler who welcomed board members and guests.  In attendance were as follows: Jerry and Cheryl Morse, Rick and Pam Clark, Mike Lubbock, Walt Sturgeon, Jim and Lea Lewis, Alex and Charlotte Beck and William Butler.

The minutes of the January meeting were approved as printed in the latest edition of Wingtips.  In the absence of ET from the Board Meeting, Jan Trader delivered the report and Don Butler gave the Treasurer's Report which was approved as presented.  He also distributed copies of the annual financial audit which has just been completed.  The club continues to be financially sound and stable thanks to the support of our members.

President Butler reported that long-time CVPWS member Claude McAllister has recently died after a brief battle with Lou Gehrig's disease.  Bo McLamb is recuperating following two heart attacks, in addition to recovering from an auto accident in which he and his wife were injured.

There was discussion of the CVPWS Wayne Hawkins Memorial Scholarship.  We hope that member Travis Birdsell will be applying for the scholarship this year.  Travis is pursuing an advanced degree in horticulture/ landscaping at NC State University with emphasis on aviary landscaping.

President Butler appointed the following outgoing directors to serve on the annual Nominating Committee: Rick Clark (committee chair), Travis Birdsell, Keith Collins, Jerry Morse and Rick Clark.  The outgoing directors were invited and encouraged to serve another term, if willing.

Mike Lubbock provided an update on Sylvan Heights saying that 40 lesser flamingoes have just arrived this week.  Construction on Phase II has begun which includes the construction of a tree house for up-close bird viewing and the creation of a wetlands project.

Walt Sturgeon gave a progress report on the Whooping Crane project which is now in its 8th year.  This year, 75 birds, along with Walt and team members, made the annual migration from Wisconsin to Florida.

President Butler gave a brief update on the 2009 APWS Convention.  Planning on the event is still in the preliminary stages.  A suggestion was made that a committee be formed to work on the travel and lodging logistics of the convention.

Don Butler updated the Board on the mute swan issue which is still unresolved.  The issue was pulled from the agenda of the last NC Wildlife Commission meeting.  Commissioner David Cobb has made assurances that no ruling will be passed without input from CVPWS.  The issue continues to be worked on by President Butler, Bo McLamb, Travis Birdsell, Walt Surgeon and Mike Lubbock.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:05pm.
